Did you know that Americans throw out an astonishing 40% of food bought? Grocery stores, restaurants, and consumers often get rid of food after its blanket label dictates that it’s expired—despite the fact that this food is quite often still perfectly safe and healthy.
Ironically, nearly 17 million American children don’t have consistent access to nutritious food. That’s about 20% of Americans.
Doug Rauch, previous President of Trader Joe’s, is working to solve that problem. He’s opening a new restaurant/grocery store in Massachusetts that will prepare fresh meals out of recently expired but still good food—helping to solve both food insecurity and food waste at the same time.
