Nell Merlino

This week, offices around the country celebrated “National Take Your Child to Work Day,” an opportunity for children to experience what it’s like to be a grownup. Before it became a gender-neutral event, “Take Our Daughters to Work Day” was a way to help young girls find a future in the workforce, and that was partly due to women’s advocate Nell Merlino.

As the creative force behind “Take Our Daughters to Work Day,” Merlino helped more than 71 million American girls achieve their dreams. Today Merlino is the Founder and President of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence, a not-for-profit providing resources, education and support to female entrepreneurs who want to take their small shops to a much higher level. Nell hopes that Count Me In will help create million-dollar enterprises that will in turn create millions of jobs for all Americans and increase the number of women in leadership positions.

Merlino is also Founder and President of Strategy Communication Action, Ltd., a New York City firm specializing in public education campaigns to motivate change and action in communities. She is also a member of the U.S. Department of State Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy (ACIEP) and appointed a Pathways Envoy by the State Department to promote women’s business growth in North and South America.

Her impressive resume goes even further. She’s a Fulbright Scholar, former union organizer and served in two state governments. She also spearheaded the United Nations’ campaign, “YWCA’s The Week Without Violence,” for their Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. To add to her roster, she’s the author of “Stepping Out of Line: Lessons for Women Who Want it Their Way in Life, in Love, and at Work.”

There’s no doubt about it: Nell Merlino is a powerhouse, and women across America are reaping the benefits.
