Working out doesn’t have to be a chore. Nor do you have to sign your life away to an over-packed, overpriced gym that offers interesting classes at inopportune times – or no classes at all. ClassPass is giving exercise lovers the chance to choose their workouts, from spin to ballet to kickboxing.
ClassPass is a monthly membership for exercise enthusiasts who don’t want to stick to just one type of workout. The Internet startup offers 10-class passes that can be used at dozens of studios throughout participating cities (right now New York, L.A., Boston and San Francisco), up to three times per studio per month. This pass is essentially buying “memberships” to multiple gyms, and the user gets to set the class schedule. At $99, the ClassPass is comparable to gyms in these four areas.
CEO Payal Kadakia combined her love of dance and business when she founded ClassPass. In 2009 she founded The Sa Dance Company, an Indian dance group that has found both commercial and critical success throughout the world. Her experience in the business world (as a consultant with Bain & Company and later working with Warner Music Group) along with her degree from MIT led her to form this successful dance company, and later, the website that is helping eliminate the boredom so many find with their workouts.
ClassPass is still growing, thanks to the help of numerous publications and websites. Media outlets from Refinery29 to TechCrunch to Fox Business have given ClassPass press – and now vendors are coming to them to participate!
