Epic Systems

Epic Systems is unlike other healthcare tech companies. First, they focus on a work-life balance – giving employees the time to enjoy life outside of work while being fully committed to their workplace. Second, they keep their client base small so they can make sure every need – from service to support – is always met.

Epic Systems

Epic makes software for hospitals and other healthcare organizations (such as academic facilities, community centers and safety net providers) that gives doctors and patients equal access and control over their healthcare information – from diagnoses to prescriptions to costs. While they only have around 300 customers, more than two million patient records per month are exchanged through Epic Systems’ software.

What truly makes Epic Systems stand out is their employee-centered outlook. Epic is private and employee-owned, and products are developed, installed and supported in-house in their Wisconsin headquarters (and has been so since its inception in 1979). The employee-focused structure has produced top of the line products and happy customers.

The hard work and dedication they expect from employees is rewarded with an awesome perk: month long sabbaticals for every five years of employment. Not only that, but if an employee chooses to visit a country he or she has never been to, Epic will pay for most of the flight and hotel for the employee and their plus one!

That fits in nicely with the startup vibe this 35-year-old company has preserved. Homemade food and snacks for free; professional development opportunities; outings, clubs and events; a conference room in a tree house – Epic Systems wants employees to wake up every morning wanting to come to work. And who wouldn’t when work has an Indiana Jones-themed tunnel and a moat?
