It’s been a long time since New York City was home to much manufacturing, but several new companies born out of three-dimensional printing technology are now being housed in the U.S.’s largest city.
Printing services company Shapeways has a workshop in Long Island City, and builds products with 3-D printers for users of their website. Meanwhile, MakerBot is working on making 3-D printers a household device. With a factory in Brooklyn, MakerBot creates small 3-D printers for technology enthusiasts, tinkers and designers who want a machine for their home or small business.
The founder of MakerBot, Bre Pettis, says that being headquartered in New York means they are closer to their customers, as New York has a rich fashion and design industry. To learn more about Bre Pettis and 3-D printing, head over to our profile.
